A lady rang me wanting me to give her the details of my past customers as she was looking for a family to have cameras in their home for a tv program. I refused and she kept telling me in the past other painters have helped her. I told her that I don't think any of my past customers would be interested and that I would not give out their personal information out as it was breach of contract, data protection etc. Anyone else had a phone call like this. Very strange

I find that a very strange request. Do you have her phone number?.....it might be worth mentioning it to the police...?
Also, I thought that TV programme makers advertised for people who wanted to participate in any programmes like that? |

yes its very strange. I do have her phone number so I will pass it on. She worked for a company called dragon something. I wished I paid more attention now. I have seen on forums requests from tv programs stating who they are after and people contact them if they are interested. It doesn't seem right that they are phoning painters for customer details. It must be a data protection issue. I will ring the police and ask them. Thanks for your advise I wouldn't have thought about contacting the police.

I agree that it sounds strange. I have a suspicious mind anyway, but even if it's nothing TOO sinister, it could be somebody trying to poach your customers.
You did rigtht not to give any information. But a call to the police would at least make you feel better about it, but could alert them to something dodgy. |

I am surprised that you ladies haven't been contacted. She did say she was based in London and yes she could be saying lots of fibs, who would know.
The main reason for posting is to make everyone aware so they are not caught out if they receive a phone call but I will be contacting the police.

Have you googled the phone number to see what comes up?
Very strange call though, why would they think that you would give out personal details? Surely they must have heard of data protection. |

I've been contacted, but told her I couldn't help her as I don't do many parties. I wouldn't give out details of anyone anyway.
If needs be in this kind of instance you can take their number and say you will pass it on and if anyone is interested they will contact her. |

How strange. You know as someone else said, it could be someone trying to poach customers. I can't see it being genuinely for a tv programme, what reason would they have for wanting families who had hired a face painter? where is the relevance of it? bizarre. I was thinking it could be someone who was at a party you painted at, and for some reason want's the contact details of the host??? but as they have contacted more than one person, that theory doesn't make sense. Hmmm... curious...
let us know if you get to the bottom of it, and definately google number as suggested.
Most likely a poacher with a really bad story!

This is the company I think it was - http://www.dragonfly.tv/
They told me they were doing a version of "The Family" (I don't watch it) and wanted a truely northern family and one that was outgoing and loved fun. Perhaps they see it that someone who books a face painter is outgoing and fun and that we potentially deal with a lot of families. |

It might well be genuine however you shouldn't disclose anyones personal info without checking with the person concerned 1st.... as per the Data Protcetion Act 1998 As a company in tv they would already know this so I am surprised they have asked! |

well it looks genuine enough, but just because parents book a face painter for their children doesn't necessarily mean that they got their own faces painted too...just a bizarre way of trying to find suitable candidates for their tv show. They should know better than asking you for information. |

I didn't say I'd give out personal information if you read my original post properly. I said there was no harm in taking the womans number and passing it on for people to ring her if they wish.
I am fully aware of the Data Protection Act having worked in the GPs for 4 years!!! I just tried to let her down nicely. |
