Here is one I have just done on myself, think I am getting better. I always seem to do the body to high.

Well, gee whiz, Julie - you're just as pretty as your daughter! In fact, you look very much alike.
I like this butterfly very much - even better than the one you did on her. I like the way the black parts in the top wing swoosh down over the white parts with a "zebra-like" look - very dramatic. I like the detail at the corner of the eyes, and I like the overall colours - that's a lovely pink at the bottom. And of course, the glitter finishes it off beautifully. This would be ideal for an evening ball or a mardi gras mask.
These designs you're finding in a realistic nature book are great. You've given me an idea - I'm off to look at Google Images. There are millions of pics of all sorts of natural things there.

That is pretty, one thing I have picked up is if you place the body between the eyes it works well, as you said yours is a bit higher
So what butterfly is this based on in your book?, we may as well do a bit of nature swatting whilst we're at it!! |

Hi Ju-bob - that is gorgeous as well! I see you have added a certain something on the eye lid - very nice too.
If I was going to CC - hope you don't mind - I prefer the shape of the top wing on your daughter - the way it flows out and away to the side - almost mirroring the eye brow - which I think is more flattering on a face - also slightly smaller which is prettier I think. On yours it is rather up and down - triangular fashion. However I do like the zebra style stripey bits. I love the colours as well. |

I agree.
Bring the body down a bit onto the nose ( but not too far... just so the 'join' of the butterfly head & body sits in line just in line with your eyes. & I also agree re the shape of the upper wings... slightly less 'standing to attention' would look better.
Great design ideas.... but then I supose Mother nature has that bit down patt! LOL. |

| It's very interesting, well done. It's so hard to do something that no-one else has done these days. |

Very nice Julie, its very inspiring to see some different designs, I love the zebra stripey bits on the upper wings, they are quite cool!
Keep it up, I think I shall be visiting the library tomorrow for some inspirational nature books! |

Oh Kat you are funny thank you.
Dizzydeb thank you, it was the Jersey Tiger actually a moth would you believe.
Juliet I certainly don't mind at all I agree about the wing shape it started out quit small
but as I tried to match the right side the left got bigger as my hand is in the way when painting so matched up with the right
Thank you Glynn I really do apreciate you advice.
Thank you Lisa.
Ta Jenn.
Oh I would love to have been the one to start a new trend in realistic butterflys. |

Hi, I used to try to do realistic butterflies for events on the Norfolk Broads; the local authority wanted realism not glitter! Not too many takers though, so it eventually morphed back into my usual ones...swallowtails are good, they are the big & yellow and only found in these parts! I used to add lots of glitter and use shiny blue paint where it should have been black really...so I sneaked some bling in there. |

| to help with the positioning of the body I always paint a head for the butterfly first which I paint slap bang in the middle of the eyebrows and the then the body comes down from there and you can make it what ever shape or length you want. Might paint a load of different bodies later and post a pic in my album. |
